Just when you think you’ve seen the last of Venom, the symbiote menace comes along and possesses MJ, turning her into Scream. You need to save MJ – who is now the host of the alien symbiote – and fight Scream as Peter Parker, which will lead you to your next confrontation with Venom and set up the final few bosses in the game. When Lizard is on the loose in NYC, Miles and Peter must chase it down and keep up the pursuit. Eventually, another phase will begin where you’re webbed onto him and have to dodge away from falling debris as you tail him up the side of a building. After a cutscene, you’ll face Lizard in his natural element – the sewers – where you’ll have to deplete his HP by wailing on him with your Spidey powers. Miles Morales 2020 Suit
When it comes to movie tie-in games, few have been as well-received as Spider-Man 2. Released alongside the Sam Raimi film of the same name, it eschewed traditional self-contained levels for an open world approach – something deeply ambitious back in 2004 – and allowed you to freely swing around New York City to your heart’s content. Spider-Man’s classic and most important weapon in his tool kit is his web shooter, and their feature in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is an excellent and necessary addition that allows players to rapidly fire multiple webs at their enemies to web them up. If players aren’t using the Sonic Burst on Symbiotes, then they can use it to a decent enough effect on non-Symbiote enemies which will cause them to get knocked back. This knockback effect is great and can throw enemies into walls and deal some nasty damage.
While many of Kraven’s targets were able to go into hiding and escape the grasp of the ferocious hunter, several of Spidey’s villains weren’t able to be saved, and have fallen under Kraven’s murderous hunt. Among the list of those who escaped Kraven’s deadly promise are Black Cat, the Prowler, Chameleon, and Mr. Negative. An October 19, 2023, PlayStation Blog post stated that the new action figure mode will let players reduce the size of characters to give the appearance of figures and place them anywhere in the world.
After learning Peter is Spider-Man, Harry uses the symbiote to help his best friend fight crime and help people around New York. The symbiote was first glimpsed at the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man, albeit within a stasis tube, and bonded to Harry Osborn to stabilize Harry’s terminal illness. Harry’s father Norman lied to Harry’s friends Peter and Mary Jane Watson that his son was working for Oscorp in Europe, when the truth was Harry was diagnosed with a terminal neurological disease and hidden in Oscorp Tower in Manhattan. As Norman approached Harry’s stasis container, the Venom symbiote visibly reacted when Norman touched a glass window on the container. The 1.002 update brought 2 more suits, a single free suit for both Miles and Peter.
There are a few cool explorable locations like the Emily-May Foundation and Coney Island, but the rest is just a blob of boring buildings. Kraven the Hunter is the main villain for most of Spider-Man 2 and he isn’t anywhere near interesting or dynamic enough to be in that role. The most interesting part of his section of the game is the symbiote. af88 takes a very long time for Venom to show up, some would say too long, but he steals the show the second he does. Everything he does is intimidating, and you feel the power behind every movement.
The suit itself looks nearly identical to the yellow spandex suit, which was popularized in the X-Men animated series. The good news is that you can change the suit style to give you that iconic yellow look. At the south-western tip of Central Park you’ll find the Baxter Building, the base of the Fantastic Four from the comics. If you want further proof that the team exist, head to the roof and you’ll see the iconic 4 logo being freshly painted. Spider-Man 2 was met with high praise when it first swung onto the PlayStation 5 in October 2023, and quickly became one of developer Insomniac’s highest-selling titles.

From modern interpretations of classics to returning fan favourites, there are treats waiting for Spider-Man fans of all generations. They are now all pure cosmetics as well – a smart separation of form and function means picking the skills and abilities you equip are separate from your choice of suit. Primarily a Peter Parker story, Spider-Man 2 explores his relationship with MJ and the reintroduction of childhood best friend Harry Osborne into his life. It’s always compelling to watch him contend with which pieces of the past to leave behind and what future self he wishes to be. In some of the missions where you control normal, everyday Peter, I couldn’t help but feel the Uncharted influence more than ever, both in the techniques it uses to tell his story and the show-stopping action sequences when he slips into the suit. No matter how hectic a scenario gets, though, he always has a quippy one-liner ready to be expertly delivered by actor Yuri Lowenthal.

While many well-known characters feature throughout the game, the final moments hint at another big player joining the franchise, either in Spider-Man 3 or another game. The fictional Southeast Asian island Madripoor is referenced in a data log during the Bad Guys On The Block main story mission. Whilst some will recall the location from the “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” Disney+ series, it’s more commonly known amongst comic-book fans as the city where Wolverine finds himself most of the time. And so Marvel’s Spider-Man is the best overall Spider-Man game, featuring a lively world brimming with side activities, smart reworks of many of Peter’s supporting cast, and plenty of action from start to finish. We’ll see if Insomniac will finally top its best effort with the upcoming Wolverine game and the inevitable Spider-Man 3, but for now, this is the best it gets if you want to play as everyone’s favorite Web-Slinger. And as Marvel’s flagship character, it just feels right that his best game is also the greatest Marvel game ever made.
